In this Australian premiere, FAC presents Matthew Ngui’s Every Point of View. This large-scale installation is one of five major works commissioned by Singapore Art Museum to mark 50 years of the nation’s independence.

Based between Fremantle and Singapore, Ngui is a significant international artist whose multi-disciplinary practice investigates perception through sculpture, photography and performance.

Democracy is one of five core national values represented by the stars on the Flag of Singapore. For Every Point of View, Ngui solicited ten statements about democracy from a cross-section of Singaporeans.

Their words form part of the resulting installation, written across a forest of PVC pipes placed throughout the galleries. Moving through, fragments of each statement can be glimpsed fleetingly but it is only at specific angles that the text can be read in full. For Ngui, acknowledging and understanding the multitude of viewpoints in society and allowing them to co-exist is one of democracy’s key underpinnings.

Showing alongside, and for the first time in WA since 2008, is Swimming; at least 8 points of view. This 15 metre wide projection, which follows the artist swimming up and down a pool, will fill the main gallery.

Ngui has exhibited extensively around the world, participating in major exhibitions including Documenta (Germany) and the Biennales of Sao Paulo (Brazil), Venice (Italy) and Gwangju (South Korea). He was Artistic Director for Singapore Biennale 2011.
