Guy Benfield presents a chaotic frontier pottery shop in celebration of the suburban and bohemian aspirations of the 1970s. His elaborate installation incorporates vast pots – paper mâché and ceramic, works on paper and video – vulgar and informed by absurdist theatre.

Benfield immerses himself in the earthy textures and feel of the 70s, deriving inspiration from sources as diverse as the ceramics in the City of Fremantle Art Collection and the Californian Mojave Desert.

Benfield’s exhibition and opening night performance are produced as part of his Fremantle Arts Centre residency in which he indulges his life-long ambition to learn ceramics. Guy Benfield lives in New York and is represented by Kaliman Gallery, Sydney, and Uplands Gallery, Melbourne.
