Focusing on the intense relationship between the wave, the board and the rider, Frontier Surfing follows some of the big waves off WA’s south west and the characters that chase them.

Frontier Surfing tracks WA’s early surfing history, featuring work by legendary surf photographer John Witzig and a series of historically significant boards designed to withstand the force of the ocean’s most colossal waves.

Showcased alongside large-scale images of WA’s most infamous breaks by big wave photographers Jamie Scott and Russell Ord, interviews with the surfers who ride them and seminal footage of surfers in action, this immersive exhibition explores the singular spiritual connection between the surfer and the wave.

Curated by WA surfer Damon Hurst and FAC Curators Dr Ric Spencer and Bevan Honey.
