French-born and Perth-based Christophe Canato brought his background in fashion and commercial photography to the task of capturing trophies from the wild.

As an insect aficionado, this series expressed the intensity of the artist’s curiosity about them. His subjects, however, defied the flatness of the picture plane and appeared  to be levitating above them. The magical infuses the documentary and his subjects are not contained by the human eye. By animating his subjects in this mysterious fashion, Canato highlighted the predatory relationship of photography to the natural world and its contribution to science’s hierarchical classificatory systems.
