Photo with the Artist is a site-specific performance combining the traditions of performance art and sculptural practice with side-show and street performance.

Dressed in appropriate ‘artistic’ attire, Brown Council hit the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour to buck for money. Brown Council invite members of the public to have their photo taken with them and for a small cost the person can take home a sign portrait. This work asks the audience to reconsider what the ‘artist’ might look like and what an artwork can be; along with literally playing out the cliche of the poor starving artist.

Brown Council is the collaborative practice of Sydney-based artists Frances Barrett, Kate Blackmore, Kelly Doley and Diana Smith. Recently they have produced work for Perspectives on Video Performance at Regina Rex in New York, Primavera 2011 at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney and Tell Me Tell Me: Korean and Australian Art 1976 – 2011 at the MCA and National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea.
